about
SAORI is a creative weaving program which uses a simple loom that is easy to start within seconds and lighter
in weight than traditional looms.
The way to expression is very simple. Choose any kind of fiber, thread, yarn or fleece and start to weave. The colors and textures of the materials excite and stimulate the mind. People quickly get the rhythm of the simple movements and relax with the sound of the loom.
SAORI is an art of weaving by hand that is dedicated to free expression
and self-development for everyone. It allows people to express themselves artistically without limitations.
Optional attachments are available for people who cannot use hands or feet.
Our goal is not to teach, but to LEAD people to explore themselves through weaving.
SAORI was founded by a Japanese woman, Misao Jo, about 40 years ago. In Japan there are more than 30,000 weavers, 12 SAORI schools, 140
studios and 300 SAORI weaving instructors who introduce SAORI at various
Japanese organizations and schools, as well as overseas. At the moment
there are only four SAORI Leader's committee members in the U.S. who are
certified by SAORI Japan. SAORI classes are growing and programs across Japan and other
countries in Asia, Middle East, North America, Central America, South America,
Europe, Australia, and Africa.
As a non-profit organization, SAORI has achieved a great deal not only
in Japan but also as a worldwide network of support for people with special
needs and those who have been victims of catastrophes. In addition SAORI
has introduced educational projects in developing nations.
The very first SAORI loom was built by Kenzo Jo in 1969, for his mother, Misao Jo. She had just founded and started
to teach SAORI program. Since then, Kenzo had made improvements in his
design, and invented various accessories to meet different needs of weavers.
SAORI's unique philosophy and Kenzo's high quality looms have been well
received in Japan and overseas for more than 30 years. (Jump to looms catalog)
